Marguerite Fetters Obituary

Rita Fetters Underhill Marguerite Susannah “Rita” (Lockhart) Fetters, 67, passed away on Friday February 3, 2012 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Huston, TX on August 23, 1944 daughter of the late Col. Eugene and Marguerite (Guldman) Lockhart. Rita earned a Bachelor of Arts in education with a minor in Fine Arts at the University of Hawaii in 1966. She met her husband Thomas Parker Fetters in 1963 in Honolulu, Hawaii where they were married on June 3, 1966. Rita began her life-long passion of educating young people by teaching second grade in Raleigh, North Carolina before moving to Vermont to raise a family. After the birth of her three children, she returned to education as a volunteer and community organizer, creating a parent-run art program at Jericho Elementary and establishing Project Graduation at Mount Mansfield Union High School. Rita’s dedication to ensuring that her children were exposed to the world while enjoying the beauty of Vermont and benefits of living in a small community, led to her involvement in the EF Foundation. As a coordinator for EF for more than 15 years she truly brought the world closer together; finding hosts for more than 200 international students in northern New England. Her love for the arts was evident in her work as a florist at the Flower Mill, the gorgeous photographs she took and the beautiful gardens she created at her home. She loved to travel and took every opportunity to visit her family, friends and EF children all over the world. Recently she enjoyed spending time with her four grandchildren passing on her love for learning, travel and the arts to them. Rita is survived by: her loving husband of 45 years Thomas Fetters of Underhill; two sons: Randy Fetters and wife Karen of Colchester; Scott Fetters and wife Meredith of Ogden, UT; her daughter Laura Fetters and husband Richard Bassett of Burlington; three brothers: Fred Jinkins and wife Marion; Gerald Lockhart and wife Celia; Robert Lockhart all of Texas; four grandchildren: Ryan and Connor Fetters of Colchester, Dylan and Sofia Bassett of Burlington; her “extended family” of International Exchange Students whom she lovingly hosted for over two decades and her goddaughter Antonia. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday February 8, 2012 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel, 57 Main Street Essex Jct., VT.
