Mark Flemming Fairfax, Vermont Obituary

Mark Flemming

Mark J. Flemming Essex Jct. Following a brief illness, Mark James Flemming, 52, was with his wife and daughter when he entered the presence of his heavenly Father. He was born in Canton, NY on March 1, 1961 and died February 4, 2014. He was raised in Trumansburg, NY and graduated from Charles O. Dickerson High School. He was involved in cross-country track, student council, drama, computer club and played the saxophone in the concert, marching and jazz bands. While at a summer camp with his parents, he was a teenager when he made the decision to receive Christ as his Savior. Mark and his parents were active in their church and developed close friendships with their church family. He inherited his grandfather's gifts in math and science and became an electrical engineer. He earned his bachelor and masters degrees in electrical engineering from Cornell University and worked at IBM for over 25 years. He developed good friendships at work and always appreciated how well the people there worked together. He was an avid reader, gifted mechanic and eager learner. He had a keen interest in learning about God's creation and was especially interested in astronomy and animals. As a child he wanted to work for NASA and was a Star Trek fan. Mark attended Cornell University on a ROTC scholarship and joined the Air Force, earning the rank of first lieutenant. He worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio where he attended Fairhaven Church. He was active in the Singles Ministry, taught Sunday school and was befriended by several men who helped him grow in his faith. Fairhaven was also the place where he met and later married Teresa Condron in 1988. They moved to Burlington, VT, Fishkill, NY and back to Essex, VT with IBM. They raised their two children, David and Natalie, in Vermont and have been active at Essex Alliance Church. They are very grateful for the Children and Youth ministries at church. Mark was a planner and even before he was married he had a collection of books he would use to teach his children biblical principles, especially how to manage money. David and Natalie were his highest priority and he did everything he could to be a role model for them. As they entered middle school he became their tutor and he usually stopped what he was doing to help them with their homework; he was rather creative with acronyms to help them memorize their materials. He was a scholar and was always like to share the things he was learning, whether it was an article in the newspaper or his thoughts about the book he was reading. He was very disciplined with his time and started most mornings with time in his Bible, prayer and exercise. Mark enjoyed his friendships with the men in his Bible study, friends at church, in the neighborhood and at work. He is survived by his parents, wife, children, aunts, uncles and cousins. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at A. W. Rich Funeral Home – Essex Chapel, 57 Main St., Essex Jct., VT 05452. Funeral services will be held on Friday February 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Essex Alliance Church, 37 Old Stage Road, Essex Junction. Burial will be in the spring.
