Maurice Bogue Obituary

Maurice E. Bogue Jeffersonville, VT /Warwick, RI Maurice Elwin Bogue, 93, died after a six month battle with the superbug C-diff colitis Thursday December 2 while in rehabilitation at Morgan Health Center in Johnson, RI for multiple protracted illnesses. Married to the late Orlina Aldora (Jewett) Bogue for 46 blessed and cherished years, he was a devout family man until her sad death from Leukemia on December 7, 1984. Now they are reunited, in Jesus’ name, for eternity. Eldest child of the late Alvin and Reba (Buker) Bogue, he was born in Burlington, VT and raised with his late siblings; Katherine, Ruth, Robert and Barbara in Jeffersonville, VT. Grandson to widely known family of Hiram Bogue, 7’ tall, whose 11 children comprised the “Tallest Family in the World” according to New York newspapers. From age 10, Maurice worked on farms and hay fields through high school bringing money to his parents and was a graduate of Cambridge High School in Jeffersonville. He and his brother Bob took part in boxing exhibitions in their youth. In the late 1930’s, Maurice met “Lin”, the future love and light of his life and they married in Putney, VT. Their only child followed a year and a half later in 1940. Gary, a long time resident of Western Montana moved back to RI. to assist his father as an advocate and caregiver in 2004. Maurice worked his way up the ladder at Brown and Sharpe Mfg. Co. while he took night courses at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. His career was interrupted by World War II when he entered military service (along with his brother and nine brother’s in law). Maurice was assigned to the 109th Naval Construction Bin (Seabees), attached to the 1st Marine Division in the South Pacific. His unit was on the Marshall Islands (Kwajalein Atoll and Roi-Namur) and the islands of Peleliu and Angaur, then the Marianas where he was operated on at Guam for a knee injury. All of the family of brothers made it home alive through the Grace of God, some luck and pure fate. Bogue purchased a home in Warwick, RI in 1955 and has lived there ever since. Returning to Brown and Sharpe after the war, he remained employed there for 37 years, eventually retiring as Foreman/Supervisor with Hardening Dept. The men lined up at the door to wish him well as he left on his last day. Maurice was Chairman of the Board, of Hillsgrove Methodist church for many years where he and Lin worshipped. He was also a member of the North Kingstown Golf Club. “Mo & Lin” were a “good fit” as they engaged in the passing of life enjoying reading, a good game of cards, table tennis, playing various golf courses and watching the Boston Red Sox. His primary hobby was working around the house and property while “Lin” enjoyed being a homemaker and garden creator. A Neuro-muscular disease slowed Maurice down in the 90’s and he considered a move back to his native Vermont. However the memory of their special place in life where they were such a “good fit” kept him energized. Though using a crutch constantly he persevered until pneumonia hospitalized him in Jan, 2005. This was followed by subsequent illnesses that led to complete bed rest (as his father had experienced 60 years earlier with a major stroke). He bravely confronted the final six years of his life with the help of his caregiver son Gary who survives him. On his last day of wakefulness, he tightly embraced a large photo of “Lin” with a kiss and a sign, not wanting to let go, he passed on to join her 3 days later. Two brave souls reunited at last. RIP. There will be no services held at this time. A graveside service with interment will be held in the family in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery in the Spring at which time full military honors will be accorded the WWII veteran. Memorial donations to Jeffersonville Cemetery Association, Arlie Williamson, Treas. P.O. Box 334, Jeffersonville, VT 05464. Arrangements are by John D. Workman, A. W.
