Muriel Mann Obituary

Muriel S. Mann WATERVILLE Muriel S. Mann, wife of Dr. Roger W. Mann, passed away at her home on Thursday, December 26, 2013. She was born to the late Dr. James H. and Annie (Hosley) Shrader in Washington, D.C. August 27, 1914. Her early years were spent in Washington and Baltimore with summers at her grandparents' farm in Virginia, in the shadow of Mt. Vernon. She graduated from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, where she met her husband, and went on to study at Rutgers University in New Jersey. She was first employed in the Personnel Office of the University of Newark, New Jersey. Following her marriage on June 27, 1939, she moved to Vermont where she and Dr. Mann raised their family and she was active in her church and community. Mrs. Mann taught at Cambridge High School, served as a Camp Fire Girl leader, was an active member of the Poetry Society of Vermont and League of Vermont Writers and was a longtime town library trustee. A devoted follower of Christ, she served her church through music and Bible study, and conveyed Christ’s love to all whom she met. Her children grew up surrounded by literature, music, poetry and artistic activities in their Waterville home, “Highmeadows.” She will be remembered for her generous hospitality, her love of young people, a never-ending supply of pink mints, her appreciation of roses and wildflowers alike, and her fondness of the ocean. Friends and family always looked forward to her annual Christmas poem. In addition to her husband, she leaves her six children, Katherine Stebbins, Roger W. (and Susan) Mann, James Mann, David (and Cynthia) Mann, Muriel (and Bill) Baker, Kristin (and David) Wells; 20 grandchildren: Katherine Stebbins-McCaffrey, Mark Stebbins, Juliet King, Jonathan Stebbins, Trista Hutchins, Todd Mann, Heidi Smith, Kyle Mann, Lon Mann, Jenna Maddox, Alyssa Parker, David Mann, Kimberly Holloway, Christopher Mann, Matthew Baker, Sara Lake, Juliana Elliott, Alison Wells, Annie Wells and James Wells; 29 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held at the home of Dr. Mann at 401 High Meadows Road, in Waterville, this evening Saturday, December 28 from 6-8 pm. An hour of visitation will also be held at the Essex Alliance Church Sunday, December 29 at 3 p.m., immediately before a 4 p.m. memorial service. The family suggests those wishing to make a donation contribute to the Waterville Town Library or the Essex Alliance Church building fund.
