Alfreda Brown Winooski, Vermont Obituary

Alfreda Brown

Alfreda "Freda" Moreau Brown passed away on July 8, 2016 at Pillsbury Manor North in South Burlington, VT. Alfreda was born on March 27, 1921, in Bedford, Quebec, the eldest of four children born to the late Alfred Moreau and Marie (Messier) Moreau. Alfreda was born on Easter Sunday and was baptized that day, which she thought was special. Alfreda grew up in Swanton, VT and attended St. Anne's Academy with the Sisters of the Holy Spirit, graduating from high school in 1939. In 1941, she entered the three year Professional Fanny Allen School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in June 1944. After graduation Alfreda worked at Fanny Allen Hospital, which included working in medical records with the Religious Hospitallers, who she remained close to throughout her life. Later she worked as a visiting nurse and school nurse in Winooski. Alfreda loved being a nurse, though her career was short. On December 27, 1947, she married Bernard W. Brown, who she met - on a blind date - while working at Fanny Allen Hospital. Bernard went in the Army in 1939 and reenlisted in 1952. Alfreda enjoyed her life as an Army wife, allowing her and Bernard to visit many countries. She gave birth to their "one and only" daughter in Germany, during one of their overseas tours. Alfreda was a devoted wife and mother. She had many friends and will always be remembered for being a kind, thoughtful and giving person. Alfreda leaves her daughter Suzanne M. Stefani, her husband John Stefani, grandson Nicholas Stefani, all of Williston, VT, her sister Pauline Sheehan and her husband, Lawrence Sheehan of Winooski, VT, her sister-in-law Jeannine Brown Casey, of South Burlington, VT , brother-in-law Robert LaClair, Sr. of South Burlington, VT, Betty Brown of Winooski, VT and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bernard on October 9, 2001, by her brother Antoni Moreau and his wife Dorene Moreau, her sister Anne Marie Benjamin and her husband, Normand Benjamin. Alfreda's family would like to extend a very special thank you to the staff at Pillsbury Manor North, in South Burlington, VT, who took care of Alfreda for close to three years. Their compassion and genuine affection for her will always be remembered and appreciated. A special thank you to Dr Frank Landry, who visited Alfreda often at home and at Pillsbury Manor North. The family would also like to thank VNA Hospice care, whose support and care for Alfreda these last two weeks has been wonderful. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Alfreda's life, will take place at Holy Cross Church, 416 Church Road, Colchester, VT, where Alfreda was a member for 42 years, on Friday, July 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weaver Street, Winooski, VT. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are under the care of Lavigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Donations in Alfreda's memory can be made to Vermont Heart Association , 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495, or to Vermont Catholic Charities, 55 Joy Drive, South Burlington, VT 05403 or to the Holy Cross Church Development Fund, 416 Church Rd., Colchester, VT 05446.
