After battling lung cancer for over 2 years Elaine "Joan of Arc" Read has ended her fight and passed on February 28th, 2019. She was surrounded by friends and family and in her selfless style, passed quickly and peacefully.
She was born March 7th, 1949, the middle of three girls to Paul and Helen Loiselle. Elaine grew up a spunky and kind girl from Winooski and dug her roots deep in the community her whole life. Her love of music spanned decades as you could hear her sing songs like "Can't Buy Me Love" by the Beatles and "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga. She shared her love of art and a smile with all she knew while working at the St. Francis Xavier and Winooski Schools. During her retirement years she enjoyed being surrounded by her grandchildren, going shopping, playing penny slots at the casinos, and watching reruns of the Golden Girls, I Love Lucy, and anything on the Hallmark channel.
She is survived by her loving husband James Read who strongly stood by her side during her battle; her three daughters: Jamie and Josh McNight and their children Katie and Tristan, Julie and Jamie Danaher and their daughter Jackie, and Jill and Matthew Abair and their children Madison and James. Elaine is also survived by her sister Dianne and Richard Cota and their daughter Jennifer and Eric Carter, niece Marie and Corey Pelkey and their sons Rick Hayden and Travis Hayden and his daughter Tria, nephew Paul and Ann Fellows and their children Savannah, Alicia, and Luke. Countless other surviving family and friends will miss her kind and loving soul, including her beloved dog Bingo. As she passed she was met by her predeceased parents Paul and Helen Loiselle, her sister Pauline Fellows, and many other family members ready to play a french tune and play some poker.
Elaine's life was dedicated to helping others and serving her family and the community. A huge thank you to the medical and nursing staff at UVMMC for their efforts to do the same for her over the last few years. Their dedication to helping others mimicked her own. Elaine lived a full life of kindness to all without hate, greed, or prejudice. Visiting hours will be on Wednesday, March 6th at LaVigne's Funeral Home in Winooski from 5-7 pm. A Mass will be held at St. Steven's Church in Winooski on Thursday, March 7th at 10am, burial service at the St. Francis Xavier cemetery and reception at the Winooski VFW will follow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in honor of Elaine's generous spirit to the Josh Pallotta Fund and/or St. Francis Xavier School.
