<p>Thomas A. [Tom] McHugh, 84, of 18 Carmichael St. (Mansfield Place Assisted Living Facility) in Essex Junction and formerly of the New North End of Burlington passed away peacefully on Friday, September 14, 2018 with his daughter by his side, following years of declining health.</p><p><br></p><p>Tom was born in Barre, VT on February 13, 1934 to James H. and Pauline (Beck) McHugh. He was a graduate of Spaulding High School, class of 1951 and Burdette College, class of 1953. At the time of his death, he was a partner with his son, David, in the rental property company of McHugh &amp; McHugh, LLC. Previously, he was a registered public accountant employed by Goldberg, Wells &amp; Company and, later, co-owner of McHugh and McHugh, owning and operating several area laundromats with his brother, William. Tom also served his country honorably in the United States Army in Germany during the Cold War as an artillery fire-direction specialist and intelligence clerk.</p><p><br></p><p>On November 27, 1954, Tom married the former Annette Morissette at St. Augustine’s Church in Montpelier. She predeceased him on July 23, 2010.</p><p><br></p><p>Tom is survived by his four children: James of Fairlawn, OH, Laura of Colchester, VT, Stephen of Bradford, VT, and David (and his wife, Laura) of Chicago, IL. He also is survived by five grandchildren: Brittany, William, Marisa, Madeline, and Caroline as well as his siblings William and his wife Helene, Kathleen Limoge and her husband, Larry, and Patrick and his wife, Judith. He also is survived by his sister-in-law, Rita McInerney and brother-in-law, George Morissette and his wife, Cecile. He was pre-deceased by his brother, James, as well as additional brothers-in-law Romeo and Armand Morissette, James McInerney, and sisters-in-law Bertha Morissette and Rita Morissette. He is further survived by a special family member, Jodi Quigley, several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and many special friends over the years, including Gerry Donahue, Bob and Mary Jane Roy, Jackie Parks, along with the surviving members of the “Sometimes Seven” poker group which included Ray Fay, Jim McLane, and Joe Mailloux, as well as other wonderful friends who are too numerous to mention but all greatly loved and appreciated.</p><p><br></p><p>Prior to his health declining, Tom enjoyed many years of playing golf, cards, and bowling with his team, “The Cry Babies.” He had a great sense of humor especially when poking fun at himself. He will be sorely missed.</p><p><br></p><p>The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Benjamin Littenberg for the exceptional care he gave Tom over these many years, along with Dr. Peter Van Buren and Dr. James Boyd. Also, special thanks are extended to the wonderfully kind and compassionate staff at Mansfield Place, all of whom made his past few years particularly special. Additional appreciation is given to Sandy Young for her generous care and concern. He loved and appreciated all of you!</p><p><br></p><p>A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 10am at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Burlington followed by the interment at Lakeview Cemetery in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association and/or the Parkinson’s Foundation.</p>
