Ethel Gray Obituary

Mrs. Ethel Lee (Toy) Gray expired on August 21, 2016, and entered into eternal life after a long, hard-fought illness. She was born in Jamesville, VA, on April 17, 1934, to the late Milton and Bernice (Harmon) Toy. In her early years, she left Jamesville, and moved to several towns on the Eastern Shore, but later returned to Jamesville, where she lived and raised her family. F-Mae, as she was affectionately known, was educated in Northampton County Public Schools. She was married to the late Alfred N. Gray, Sr. From this union, they had five children. She worked many years, starting as a housekeeper, nursery worker, and Perdue transport driver for over 30 years. Her passion was raising her grandchildren and great grandchildren after retirement. Jamesville residents were not just neighbors, but to F-Mae, they were family. She would provide a meal to anyone that came to her house. She always made you feel at home. You could always count on her for a laugh, but if she didn’t agree with you, she would definitely let you know. Everyone knew she was a feisty lady, but always fair. Prior to her illness, she served as a Deaconess for many years at St. Mary’s Baptist Church in Jamesville. She leaves to cherish her memories, her five children, Carmella Gray, Exmore, VA; Alfred Gray, Jr., his wife Sharon, Painter, VA; Theopa Gray, Exmore, VA; Llewellyn Gray his wife Celestial, Belle Haven, VA; and Wilfred Gray, Sr., his wife Mae, Painter, VA. She leaves 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She also leaves 2 sisters, Hilda Brinkley, her husband Morris, Selbyville, DE; Doretha Fields, her husband William, New Castle, DE; and a brother, James Toy, Exmore, VA. From marriage, she leaves a sister-in-law, Florence Gray, NY, and a brother-in-law, Charles Collins, SC, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She had an endless list of special friends with whom she spoke with daily, Mrs. Gertrude Morris, Mrs. Florence Mapp and Mrs. Inez Nock, to name a few.
