Loyal Thomas “Tommy” Grimes, Jr., was born on February 20, 1948 in Primm Springs, Tennessee to Loyal Thomas Grimes, Sr. and Gladys Quince Grimes. In 1954, the Grimes family moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Thomas was wedded to Doretha Conquest in 1996. He graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1966 from Mary N. Smith High School located in Accomac, Virginia. He then matriculated at Virginia State College. Subsequent to pursuing his college education, he moved to Stamford, Connecticut, where he spent 4 years employed at Pitney Bowes. Thomas possessed an acuity in mathematics, which he parlayed into a successful career as a Wind Weighting Specialist in the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) at NASA Wallops Flight Facility for 20+ years. During his career at NASA, he travelled to several countries and continents throughout the world. Thomas had a passion for excellence in his profession and in his everyday life. He was sharp-witted, stylish, innovative, and multi-talented. He was also highly regarded for his athleticism in basketball, football, and baseball. When he was not playing sports, he enjoyed coaching men, women, and children’s recreational activities. Thomas also had a love for music and entertainment, often promoting social gatherings in his community. He made it known to many that his greatest achievements were his children. He prided himself on being supportive and present in the lives of his sons and daughters and he relished time spent with his grandchildren. Thomas passed away peacefully on March 10, 2017, in Hampton, Virginia. Preceding him in death is his father, Loyal Thomas Grimes, Sr. He is survived by his wife Doretha Grimes, his mother Gladys Grimes, and from the union of Loyal and Gladys Grimes, his two sisters Annie Gunter (Benjamin) and Barbara Selby (Gregory). Thomas leaves to share a rich legacy of daughters COL Tonya Dickerson, Tomeka Church, Esq. (Stephen, Sr.), Tanya Gale, Bernetta Cunningham, Tomesha King (Tyrone), Tiffany Grimes, Rykea Conquest, Tantania Conquest, and Cora Miles; sons Terrill Grimes (Tanya), Loyal Thomas Grimes, III (“TJ”), Leshawn Grimes (“LT”), Jervon Johnson, Travon Grimes, and Shaquille Grimes; grandchildren Enfinity, Jiaya, Janay, Justin, Loyal, IV (“Trey”), Laya, Stephen, Jr., Terrill, Jr., Taliyah, Jade, Travon G., Jr., Malik, Waltreon, Travon C., Wilique, Shakia, Anto’Nia, Demya, Atiana, Trinity; great-grandchildren Sa’maj and Jasir, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
