Sarah Hallett

Sallie Hays Hallett, 90, the wife of Ralph Hallett Jr. of Irvington, VA, died Monday in Kilmarnock, VA. She was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Irvin Tucker Brown and Blanche Bales Brown. She graduated from Duke University and worked in Washington, D.C. In 1952, she married the late Marion Steele Hays, and moved to Little Rock, AR, in 1953 where she lived until 1986, when she returned to Washington, D.C. She and Mr. Hays were divorced. She married Mr. Hallett in 1990. Mrs. Hallett was active in the Women’s Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools during the Little Rock school crisis in the late 1950s. She was also a staff member of the Arkansas Constitutional Convention in 1969-70. She was a lifelong Presbyterian and until her death was a member of Western Presbyterian Church in Washington. She was an avid conservationist and supporter of environmental preservation. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son and two daughters, Steele Hays (Melody) of Washington, D.C.; Sarah Facciobene (Carmen) of Potomac, MD, and Melissa Licon (Val) of Reno, NV, and seven grandchildren. She is also survived by two stepchildren: Candice Chatfield (Chris) of New Mexico, and Ralph Hallett III (Marsha) of Reno, NV. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8th at Grace Episcopal Chapel, Kilmarnock.
