Margie Ellen Compton Obituary

Margie Ellen Smith Compton, 85, of Rosedale, Va., passed into her heavenly home on Thursday, August 10, 2017, from a lengthy illness. She was born January 30, 1932, to her parents, Cleveland and Mendie Lester Smith in Council, Va.


Margie was preceded in death not only by her parents but her beloved husband, Ralph L. Compton; their infant son, Ricky B. Compton; her brother, Clarence Smith; sisters, Elsie Compton, Hattie Smith, and Carmie Keen and one nephew, Steve Smith. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.


She is survived by one daughter, Sharon Compton Stevens and husband Wayne of Glade Spring, Va.; son, Tommy Compton and wife Debbie of Abingdon, Va; grandson, Rick Stevens and wife Jessica of Rosedale; great-granddaughter, Valeigh Stevens of Rosedale; brothers-in-law, Walt Compton and wife Ada of Goldsboro, N.C., Kenneth Compton and wife Virginia of Council, Jack Smith of Vandalia, Ohio; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Compton of Council and Elizabeth "Libby" Smith of Dayton, Ohio.


Margie is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed a life-long friendship with Estelle Hale Regan, Cookeville, Tenn.


Margie was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Council and loved her Lord and Savior. She also enjoyed Bluegrass music and dancing. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed her family and friends. She was very proud of her years of being a teacher. Beginning in a single classroom with seven grades at Combs Ridge Elementary School and ending with Council Elementary.


We, the family, would like to express our appreciation to the staff of National Health Care (NHC) of Bristol, Commonwealth Assisted Living and Memory Care of Abingdon. Also, one very special caregiver and friend, Shirley Church.


Pallbearers will be Tommy Compton, Rick Stevens, Roger Compton, Alex Compton, Shannon Fletcher, Mike Thompson, Loman Sullivan, and Randy Compton.


Honorary pallbearers will be Walt Compton, Kenneth Compton, Carlos Blankenship, John Hale, and Randall Turner.


Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017, in the Owens Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Kinder officiating.


A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 13, 2017, in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A. Mountain. Those wishing to follow in the funeral procession are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:15 p.m.


The family will receive friends on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
