Esther Magruder

Esther Wigington Magruder, 90, of Salem, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018. A native and life long Salem resident, she was born February 15, 1928 to the late Isaac M. and Ethel Weaver Wigington. She enjoyed doing needlework, was active in local bridge and garden clubs, and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Esther was a kind and compassionate wife, mother, sister and friend who loved to hug everyone she met. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Edward G. Magruder; a son, Michael R. Magruder, MD; five sisters, Mildred Ferris, Gaynelle Gibson, Ruby Hodges, Norma Broaddus and Xia Yates, and three brothers, Paul Wigington, C.M. Wigington and Ike Wigington. She is survived by a daughter, Kathryn Marencik and husband Rick; beloved foster son, Bob Morgan and wife Becky; grandchildren, Michael T. Magruder, Richard M. Magruder and Travis W. Morgan and wife Christine; a sister, Wray Scruggs and husband Bob, several great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and friends, and her beloved granddog, Rascal. The family would like to extend special thanks to all the staff at the Joseph C. Thomas Center, Gentle Shepherd Hospice and the Outreach Ministry at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. A graveside service will be held at 11AM, Friday, June 22, 2018 at Fairview Cemetery. The Very Rev. Robert E. Brodie will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5PM, Thursday at John M. Oakey & Son, Salem. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church 42 E. Main St. Salem, VA 24153.
