Col. William Warren U.S. Army Retired

Dateline: South Hill, VA Col. William M. “Bunky” Warren, Retired US Army, died Friday, May 20, 2011, at the age of 74. Son of the late Lindsey and Camilla Warren, he is survived by his wife, Almalyle Lea Warren of the home; a son, Lindsey Thomas (Heidi) Warren of South Hill; two daughters, Celia Warren (Stephen) Neff of Midlothian and Alma Warren (Rob) Showalter of Richmond. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren: Hannah Marie Warren, Peyton Douglas Neff, Hunter Preston Neff, Robert Carroll Showalter, III, and William Warren Showalter; a brother John Burnett Warren of South Hill; and a sister, Camilla “Bet” Warren McLean of South Hill. Col. Warren was retired from the US Army Reserve after thirty years of service culminating with his assignment as commander, 31st Combat Aviation Group. He was commissioned through ROTC upon graduation from Virginia Tech in 1958 and was a member of The Old Guard. A graduate of the Air War College, Col. Warren’s distinguished career, characterized by leadership, included twelve years in command assignments in units of the 80th Division and the 97th US Army Reserve Command. His military decorations and badges include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Master Army Aviator Badge. He was a member of the American Legion Post 79, VFW Post 7166, South Hill Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge #297, Danville Scottish Rite, ACCA Temple Shrine, South Hill Moose Lodge, and Honorary Member of the South Hill Rotary Club. During his tenure with the American Legion, he served as Commander of Post 79, 5th District and Western Zone Vice Commander. On the board of the Mecklenburg-Brunswick Regional Airport, he previously served as its Chairman. Mr. Warren was a tobacco and cattle farmer and co-owner/operator of L. G. Warren’s Store where many chose to gather daily to discuss current events of the area. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11am Wednesday, May 25 at Farrar Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery with full masonic and military rites. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 at the funeral home.
