Hollis Estes

Hollis Mason Estes Sr. 91, a World War II veteran, died August 19, 2011. He was the son of Nellie Rowley and George Cary Estes. He was preceded in death by his brothers George and Gerald. He is survived by his sister Elizabeth Estes Shockley of Snow Hill, Maryland and his wife of 65 years Evalyn Mebane Gordon Estes. They have five children; Carolyn Mebane Estes Paulette and her husband Bill; Hollis Mason Estes Jr. and his wife Susan; Eve Estes Butts and her husband Jeffery; George Cary Estes and his wife Lisa; and Ellen Pleasants Estes and her husband George Wolbers; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Hollis began farming as a boy during the depression. Later he became a tobacco grader and sold Federal Crop Insurance. In retirement he returned to the farming he loved with the passion, intensity and the vitality of a young man. Hollis will be remembered fondly as a savvy bridge player, an enthralling story teller, a dedicated little league coach and for his many bountiful harvests. A memorial service will be held Sunday August 21 at 2 PM at the South Hill Presbyterian Church. Guests are welcome at the family farm after the memorial service. Graveside services will be held Monday, August 22 at 11 AM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations may be made to the aforementioned churches.
