Mr. John Sterling Newman, Jr., age 71 of Union Level, died Friday, October 07, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Carole Ann Newman of the home; one daughter Michelle (Charles) Crowder and one sister Shirley (Marvin) Carter and two grandchildren, Anna Nicole Allman and Elizabeth Sterling Crowder. Also surviving are four nieces, Melinda Matthews Walker, Cheryl C Vaughan, Tracy C Colavita and Rebecca Matthews Wilson; nephew, John Lewis Matthews; great nieces Taylor Leighann Walker, Meredith Marie Colavita, Jessica & Maya Wilson and great nephews Clay Walker and Jacob Colavita. Mr. Newman is also survived by a special family friend Josephine Baskerville and his beloved Abby & Gizmo. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Matthews. Mr. Newman was a self-employed farmer, a life member of Meherrin River Hunt Club and Buckhorn Volunteer Fire Department. A celebration of John’s life will be held at 2pm Sunday, October 9 at Meherrin River Hunt Club in Union Level. The family request casual dress (& BYOB).
