Mr. Robert (Bob) Hall Conner, known to his closest friends as “Rudy”, died Saturday, April 19, 2014. The son of the late Robert Buford and Bertha Elizabeth Conner, Rudy was born in Brunswick County on December 28, 1939, was raised in South Hill and married Patricia B Conner on October 1, 1960. Together they had two sons, Robert E. “Bobby” Conner and Charles A. “Tony” Conner and wife Lisa. Also surviving are three grandchildren, A. J. Conner, Dell Conner, and Larissa Conner, and one brother, Jimmy Conner of Kenbridge. Mr. Conner was President and Co-Owner, along with his wife, of Conner Claims Service, an insurance adjusting company from 1980 until 2006. He was also the owner/operator of a beef cattle farm in Brunswick County, an active hunter and fisherman, and a member of the Lake Gaston Striper Club. “Rudy” was a man of great achievements, devoting much of his time to his community. He served on the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors from 1992 through 2011, representing the Meherrin District, during which time he worked on the implementation of a countywide 911 system including the naming/mapping of roads. Additionally, he was instrumental in countywide zoning, the development of the Fort Christanna Historical Site and construction of the new Albertis S. Harrison Jr. Courthouse. His lobbying efforts to have the Meherrin River designated as a Virginia State Scenic River were successful and he helped create the Brunswick County Water Safety Committee. “Rudy” also served on the Brunswick County Planning Commission and was a Certified Planning Commissioner. He served as both Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Southside Planning District Commission Board of Directors, and served on the Board of Directors of the Lake Country Development Corporation, Telecommunications Committee for the Virginia Association of Counties, the Lake Gaston Weed Council, Past President of the Richmond Claims Association, The Roanoke River Basin Advisory Commission, and former Chairman of the Roanoke River Service Authority Board of Directors. “Rudy” generously gave his time to community organizations and was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, a Life Member of the Ebony Volunteer Fire Department, and served in the South Brunswick Ruritan Club for more than 20 years during which time he was President and Vice President. He served as co-captain with his wife for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Rudy was a 48 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Richmond serving as a Master Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite, and ACCA Temple of Richmond. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 2pm, Wednesday, April 23 at Prospect United Methodist Church with entombment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:30-8:30 at Farrar Funeral Home in South Hill and other times at the home.
