Thomas Leggett Obituary

Mr. Thomas W. Leggett, Sr. age 90, of South Hill died Monday, May 2, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Margaret S. Leggett of the home, one son, Thomas W. “Tommy” Leggett, Jr. (Betty) of Danville, and two daughters, Sara Jane Leggett of Richmond and Jeanne L Dwyer (Dr. Kenneth) of Myrtle Beach, SC. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Mark W. Leggett, Thomas W Leggett, III, Keith Dwyer, and Katie Dwyer; and one sister, Mrs. Millicent L Kennedy. Mr. Leggett served as a Navy Pilot (Pacific Theatre) during WWII . After his military service he graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1941 and Medical College of Virginia. In 1953 he became the Hospital Administrator at Community Memorial Hospital (later known as Community Memorial Healthcenter) where he served for 33 years and was a member of the American Hospital Association and the Virginia Hospital Association. In 1953, he joined the South Hill Rotary Club where he served as Sec./Treasurer for almost 40 years and was the first member in South Hill to be awarded the Paul Harris Award. Mr. Leggett was Chairman of the Salvation Army South Hill Chapter for more than 40 years, a member of American Legion Post 79, the Bread Box, Ducks Unlimited, Accelerated Reading Program and Lunch Buddies for South Hill Elementary School, and the Boy & Cub Scout Silver Beaver. For more than 10 years he was active in Operation Teddy Bear with Gleaning for the World, a member of South Hill United Methodist Church, an avid golfer, a loving husband, father and friend to all that knew him. A celebration of life service will be conducted at 11am Thursday, May 5th at Farrar Funeral Chapel with interment to follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2-4pm and from 6:30-8.
