William Boyd Wilson, 83, born on June 11, 1931, in Palmer Springs, Virginia passed away peacefully Saturday, April 25, 2015, at home, with his wife, Joyce A. Wilson, at his bedside. Born and raised on a tobacco farm in Palmer Springs, he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He then worked at Lockheed Aircraft for 2 ½ years before returning home to his passion—farming. Besides being a tobacco farmer, he raised cotton, cucumbers, wheat and other grain crops. He was a charter member of Palmer Springs Volunteer Fire Department serving as Chief for many years. He served as Superintendent of Union Chapel United Methodist Church which he helped rebuild before joining the service. He served on the Board of Directors of Mecklenburg County Farm Bureau and was a member of the American Legion of South Hill. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bessie Wilson, and his grandson, Wilson Tharrington. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joyce Wilson, his children, Randy (Betsy) Wilson of Windsor, North Carolina, Sally (Keith) Tharrington of Palmer Springs, and Henry Wilson of Palmer Springs; five grandchildren Angela (Jimmy) Sanford, Ashley (Seth) McCullen, Brigham (Shelly) Wilson, Walt Wilson and Taylor Wilson; three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Aaron Sanford and Riley Wilson. Pall Bearers are Brigham Wilson, Seth McCullen, Greg and Rusty Thrift, John Fleming and Jay Crowder. Honorary Pall Bearers are Wilson Fleming, John Tanner and Robert Royster. An 11AM funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Palmer Springs, Virginia. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7 – 8:30 at Farrar Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements.
