Ann Shrader Aberdeen, Washington Obituary

Ann Shrader

Ann McCartney Martin Shrader, age 92, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2016 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen. From her birth in Bo’ness, Scotland on December 22, 1923, Ann was proud of her Scottish heritage, always in possession of her British passport, while holding a United States green card. She could never quite sever ties with the auld country, and commit to the US as her permanent home. Ann had an insatiable interest in reading, particularly mysteries, with a keen, intuitive nature about the world and the people that inhabit it. She grew up in Bo’ness with her older brother (Tommy), four sisters (Nellie, Agnes, Betty and Jean), father (Samuel) and mother (Elizabeth). Ann enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Services (women’s branch of the British Army) at the outbreak of World War II, joining her father and brother in service to the United Kingdom. At a USO dance in Winchester, England, she met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Shrader who was serving in the United States Army. They were married in October 1945 at the Carriden Parish Church in Bo’ness, and Ann migrated to America in 1946, initially to New Jersey, and then, to Seattle. In the early 1960s, Bob joined the Lamb-Grays Harbor Company, and they made their home in the Bench Drive area of Aberdeen for over 30 years. Bob died in Aberdeen in 1986. Ann is survived by her three children: Patricia Allman, Aberdeen, Ian (Jerri), Ocean Shores and Dale (Lorrie), Spartanburg, SC; 5 granddaughters and several great-grandchildren; and also two sisters: Betty and Jean of Bo’ness, Scotland. Ann now travels the Heavenly verdant hills and dales of her cherished Scotland with all the loved ones who have passed before her, with excursions to her adopted America from time to time! A memorial reception will be held at 11 AM Saturday, July 16th in the Dorothy Mann Reception Room at Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen. A card of condolence with a message or a memory may be sent to the family at www.fernhillfuneral.com Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
