FERN HILL 16 Dec 2013 Daily World, obituary and photo Helen Faye Mason of Montesano passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen. She was 83 years old. Helen was born on April 10, 1930 in Bellingham, WA to Frank James and Tollie (Darnell) Horton and was raised by Art Horton, her step-father. Helen graduated from Forks High School in 1948 and then moved to Seattle to attend the Peterson Business College. She met her future husband, Jim Mason, on her 19th birthday in Forks and married him eight months later on December 24, 1949. In 1958, Jim and Helen moved to Seattle so Jim could attend the Edison Business School. Helen worked for six years in the accounting department of Kemper Insurance and assisted in the support of the family while Jim was in his pursuit of his CPA certificate. In 1964, the Masons moved to Central Park and bought a mobile home park. Several years later the Masons purchased land and worked to build the Country Estates mobile home park where she resided until her passing. Helen was instrumental in the building and success of both mobile home parks. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, R. James “Jim” Mason, of the family home in Montesano; a son: James C. “Jim” Mason, Union, WA; two other children, a daughter, Terri Lomax, passed away in 2002 and a son, Don Mason, passed as an infant. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Bill & Judy Horton of Satsop and sister, Pat Hanchett of Salem, OR. She has four grandchildren, Elisabeth Holt, Mason Lomax, Jill Jelovich and Sean Mason and five great-grandchildren, Dylan & Lily Holt, Connor Jelovich and Barrett & Aubree Mason. Helen was a beautiful girl, woman, and person and Jim felt honored that she chose to marry him almost 64 years ago. Visitation will be held from 1 to 5 PM, Friday, December 20th at Fern Hill Funeral Home. There will be a Celebration of Helen’s life on Saturday, December 21st from noon – 2:00pm at the Rotary Log Pavilion in Aberdeen. The family suggests memorials may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, Pacific Harbors Council, 4802 S. 19th St., Tacoma, WA 98405.
