Johnnie Simera

Johnnie Riley Simera, Sr., 91, a lifetime resident of Grays Harbor and former employee of Weyerhaeuser’s Cosmopolis Pulp Mill, died Wednesday morning, March 9, 2011 at Willapa Harbor Care Center in Raymond, Washington. Johnnie was born on September 6, 1919 in Aberdeen to Johnnie and Bertha (Wilson) Simera. He grew up in Aberdeen and attended Weatherwax High School. In 1940, John married Dorothy Pierson in Aberdeen. She died on January 15, 1993. Johnnie joined the Army in 1944 and fought in France and Germany during WWII. He was awarded 3 service medals. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946 and returned to Aberdeen where he worked for various mill in the area before retiring from the Cosi Pulp Mill in 1981. Johnnie also owned a gravel pit in South Aberdeen known as Simera’s Pit. Johnnie and Dorothy moved to Westport in 1978 where he lived until just recently. Johnnie was a lifetime member of the Aberdeen VFW. He enjoyed fishing, clam digging, mushroom picking, collecting sand dollars and anything to do with being outdoors. He also liked being with his kids and grandkids. Johnnie is survived by two sons: Johnnie Simera Jr. of Olympia and Tom and his wife Judith Simera of Ocosta; Thirteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; and a special friend, Janette Conn of Westport. There will be a graveside inurnment for Johnnie on Monday, March 14th at 11 AM in Fern Hill Mausoleum in Aberdeen. Cremation arrangements are through Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
