Dorothy Irene Hereth Obituary

Dorothy Irene Dewey Hereth, 97, passed away from natural causes on Aug. 14, 2007, at Evergreen Estates, Clarkston. Dorothy was a retired teacher, and a volunteer with the tax program. Dorothy was born Feb. 7, 1910, in Worthington, Minn. Her parents were Ernest M. and Mary Gowling Dewey. She married Walter (Walt) Hereth on Sept. 21, 1936, in Moscow. Walt preceded Dorothy in death, having passed in 1955. Hereth Park in the Orchards was named after Walt Hereth after his passing. Dorothy lived and worked in Lewiston. She taught fifth grade at Orchards School until her retirement at age 65. She worked as an AARP tax counselor and coordinator for north central Idaho, which included Lewiston, Clarkston, Moscow, Grangeville, Orofino and Kamiah. She was also a volunteer at North Lewiston Visitor's Center for nearly four years. In 1991 she received the National Community Service Award from AARP. Additionally, Dorothy held offices in the Retired Teacher's Assoc., was a volunteer at the Dogwood Festival, and was both a member and volunteer with local and state Parents Teachers Association. Dorothy's hobbies included travel, pinochle, board games, reading, and fishing. Dorothy graduated from Moscow High School in 1928. She attended the University of Idaho, obtaining a bachelor's in Business in 1932, and held an Idaho teaching credential. She is survived by her son, Herb Hereth and his wife Jane, of Sacramento, Calif; a daughter, Marilyn Horton, of Mountain View, Calif.; brother Keith and long-time companion, Shirley Vance, of Worley, Id.; brother Bob Dewey and wife Corrine of Spokane; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walt Hereth; son-in-law John Horton; and stepgrandson, Johnny Horton. Cremation will take place, and a private family gathering will be held in her honor. The family suggests memorial donations be made in lieu of flowers to the American Heart Association, c/o Mrs. Charles Havens, Chairman, 2765 Grandview Drive, Clarkston 99403.
