Robert Carroll "Bob" Hughes, 82, passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010, in Wenatchee. He was a husband, father, teacher, orchardist, fisherman, serviceman and traveler. He was born in Pasco, WA and lived with his parents, Commodore "Com" and Viola Hughes and brother, John, on their farm near Kennewick, WA. He graduated from Kennewick High School in 1946. He especially enjoyed his shop classes and playing trumpet in the band. His mechanical talents appeared early, repairing pocket watches, bicycles, farm machinery and motors of all kinds. His first job was with Graves Auto in Kennewick, where he worked during the summer while in high school and full time from 1946 to 1948, when he decided to attend Washington State College in Pullman, following the choice of his parents and brother. There, he met "the love of my life," Eleanor King. They were married December 26, 1950, and continued their education at WSU. He completed his Business Administration degree, graduating in 1952. He attended the U.S. Army Signal School in Ft. Monmouth, NJ, was assigned to White Sands Proving Ground in Las Cruces, NM and served in Korea. At his return, he continued his education at Eastern Washington College, Cheney, to become a Teacher. He taught wood shop, mechanical drawing, plastic and leather crafts for four years at White Pass High School in Randle, WA and 21 years of teaching wood shop, mechanical drawing and electricity at Sterling Junior High (Middle School) in East Wenatchee. Bob was a member of VFW Post 3617 in East Wenatchee; a member of American Legion Post in Wenatchee; and Past Commander American Legion Post in Randle WA. He was also Past President of the North Central Region Washington Industrial Art Association. He enjoyed his cherry orchard, fishing and square dancing with the Cascade Twirlers, Buds and Blossoms and danced at many square dances around the states. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor. Bob loved and was proud of his children, Susana Jenkins of Sandy, OR, Pamela Hughes of Wenatchee, Douglas Hughes of Highlands Ranch, CO and Barbara Hughes and husband, Chris Frimoth of Portland, OR; as well as grandchildren, Erika Leachman and husband, Grayson Hittle of Santa Barbara, CA, Shana Leachman of Catonsville, MD, Chad Leachman of Los Angeles, CA, Jennifer, Nicole and Kyle Hughes of Highlands Ranch, CO and Aubrey and Toby Frimoth of Portland, OR; and great-granddaughter, Cambria Hughes of Highlands Ranch, CO. A Memorial Service Celebrating Bob's Life will be held Monday, September 27, 2010, at 1:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church, 1700 Grant Road, East Wenatchee.
