William Cook Obituary

William "Henry" Cook, 86, of Martinsburg, WV passed away peacefully at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility on Monday, October 16, 2017 surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy battle of cancer. Born February 21, 1931, he was a life-long resident of Martinsburg, and the son of the late Elmer and Ethel (Bly) Cook. He was a retired letter carrier from the United States Postal Service after 32 years of service. After retiring, he continued working 10 years at Musselman/Knouse Foods as well as part-time at Miller's Apple Valley Chevrolet as a driver/errand-man. Henry was a member of Pilgrim Presbyterian Church where he previously held various offices including Elder and Deacon. He attended local schools and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1949. He served in the US Army from 1953-1955 ending of the Korean War in Lawton, Oklahoma. Henry is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Janice Hartley Cook, just celebrating their anniversary on September 22; a daughter, Barbara Ellen Spencer and husband, Harry "Buddy" Spencer, III of Martinsburg; two sons, Kenny Cook and wife, Debi of Charlottesville, VA; Donnie "Don" Cook and partner Bill Thurston of Martinsburg; five grandchildren, Susan (Carbaugh) Wathen and husband, Chris of Murfreesboro, TN; Kenda (Cook) Thurston and husband, Hance of Chesapeake, VA, Greg Carbaugh and wife, Heather of Martinsburg, Brandon Cook and wife, Russanna of Lynchburg, VA, and Whitney (Cook) Steele, and husband, William Henry "BJ" of Lynchburg, VA; eleven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Stinespring of Lynchburg, VA; three brothers, Ralph Cook and Carl Cook both of Martinsburg and Roland Cook of Cowpens Spartanburg, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Diane; and a sister, Darlene Hoffmaster. Henry's pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who all were blessed to call him Pappaw. Henry was an inspiration to all who knew him. He took his Christian faith very seriously and putting God and his family as his number one priority in life. Loving, compassionate, hardworking, caring, generous, honest, and giving are just a few examples to describe Mr. Cook. Even during his battle with cancer, Henry continued to be a very strong fighter and was determined not to give up. Henry was never a stranger to anyone. Always enjoyed talking to others, meeting new friends and sharing each other's lifelong stories. He always enjoyed getting together with family and friends, especially attending family reunions to reunite with those out of town. Henry and his wife enjoyed traveling in their motor-home through many states while enjoying their retirement. One of their favorite locations to relax and enjoy was Myrtle Beach. For many years they traveled with several of their closest long-time family friends. Henry and Janice also loved attending Annual Southern Gospel Music Concerts and reuniting with special friends. He always enjoyed the visits from each one and was always quick to let everyone know how proud he was of them. Henry will truly be missed by his family and many, many friends that knew him. The family would like to thank Dr. Galbraith, Dr. Wagner, and Dr. Ingram of Winchester Medical Center as well as the many family members, friends, neighbors, and especially Melissa Clements, RN and all the staff at Hospice of the Panhandle for their help taking excellent care of him at home and at the Hospice facility.
