Harold “Gene” E. Smith, 89, of New Martinsville, WV died peacefully while watching a football game on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at his home. Harold was born April 12, 1928 in New Martinsville, WV; son of the late Arthur and Toy (Elson) Smith. He was a retired operator for Bayer, U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII and member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Sistersville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sister, Anna E. Ward. Surviving are his wife of sixty-seven years, Lena (Blatt) Smith; two sons, Michael (Cindy) Smith of New Martinsville, WV and David (Dee) Smith of Wheeling; daughter, Diana Smith of Valley Grove, WV; grandchildren, Stacey (Kevin) Yoho, Erica (Scotty Wade) Smith, Courtney (Silas) Archer, Jill (Charlie) Emery, Holly (Shane) Hyde and Natasha Smith; niece, Karen (John) Richmond and six great grandchildren, Braxton Yoho, Emily Yoho, Ryder Richmond, Lena Hyde, Liam Hyde and Gage Emery. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that private Masses be offered in Harold’s honor. Interment in Northview Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
