James Evans

Evans, James Lloyd Appleton Age 92, died September 3, 2010, at Cherry Meadows in Appleton. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Katherine (Schuh) Evans; his children, Steve (Mary) Evans, John (Mary) Evans, Ellen (David) Rogers, Martha (Austin) Boyle, and Jim (Mary) Evans; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his brother Donald Evans and his grandson Daniel Evans. Born and raised in Marcus, Iowa, the son of Julian Evans and Ellen (Souhan) Evans, he was a longtime resident of Appleton. Jim attended Marquette University, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He then worked as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Antonio, Texas. He later enlisted in the Navy, serving at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Waukegan, IL, where he met his wife, Katherine Schuh, who was working at the base as a librarian. They were married on July 13, 1946, and moved to Appleton, where Jim became president and owner of the Outagamie Abstract and Title Company, later renamed Evans Title Companies. Jim was active in St. Mary Parish, serving on the finance committee, parish counsel and cemetery committee. Jim also volunteered with the Salvation Army. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the Knights' board. He also was a member of Appleton Elks Lodge #337 and bowled in the Elks League. Additionally, Jim belonged to the Golden K Kiwanis and, for many years, Buttes des Morts Country Club. Visitation will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 South State St. in Appleton, on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, at 9 a.m. followed by Mass at 11 am with Reverend Robert Lexa presiding. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Joseph Food Pantry, 1465 Opportunity Way, Menasha, WI 54952
