Kathleen Jungenberg Kenosha, Wisconsin Obituary

Kathleen Jungenberg

Kathy Elizabeth passed away in her home with her husband at her side on August 11, 2013 due to pancreas and liver cancer. She was born on August 21, 1946 in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Ann and Robert Tully. Kathy graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1968 with a degree in elementary education. She taught fifth grade for two years in Madison, Wisconsin where she met her future husband Gary Jungenberg. They were married on June 20, 1970 at St. George Catholic Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Kathy moved to Kearny, Arizona with her husband and continued teaching as a substitute in the Kearny School System. While substituting in a kindergarten class the kids couldn’t remember, or pronounce, her last name so they called her Mrs. Hummingbird. This apparently was a premonition to her lifelong love of birding, particularly Hummingbirds, which she picked up in Arizona. Kathy and her husband traveled extensively throughout the West visiting and hiking through all of the National Parks, some several times. She also acquired her first of two West Highland White Terriers while in Arizona. These little “Westies” were her constant companions in Arizona and later in Salt Lake City, Utah. She traveled many times back to Wisconsin to visit with her family and assisted both her mother and father over the years prior to their passing. While in Salt Lake City, Kathy developed her love of flower gardening, always looking for another perennial to add some color and variety to what she had already planted. Over the years, from high school on, Kathy maintained friendships with people she knew in Arizona, Utah, Washington, Georgia and Wisconsin, at times visiting during vacation trips, but always writing and calling at birthdays and other occasions throughout the year. These people in turn sent numerous cards and gifts along with frequent phone calls during her bout with cancer. Their support, prayers and letters were always welcome and are greatly appreciated. Kathy is survived by her husband of 43 years, Gary Jungenberg, her sister, MaryAnn Tully-Smith, her niece, Debra Smith-Ricchio (Romano), and her grand niece, Breanna Ricchio. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ann and Robert Tully, niece, Susan Smith- Delany, grand niece, Danielle Ricchio, grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles. Kathy was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Sandy,Utah. A visitation will be held at the Proko Funeral Home on Friday August 23rd from 10 a.m.-12 noon. Interment will be at St. James Cemetery in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Proko Funeral Home & Crematory 5111-60th Street Phone: (262) 654-3533 Visit Kathleen’s Online Memorial Book at: www.prokofuneralhome.com
