Shirley I. Schaufel, 81, of Kenosha passed away Wednesday, October 10th, 2007, at St. Luke's Hospital Medical Center in Milwaukee. Born in Kenosha on November 11, 1925, she was the daughter of the late William and Tina (Hildebrandt) Riddel. A lifelong resident of Kenosha, she graduated from Mary D. Bradford High school in 1943. On March 30, 1946, at Frieden's Evangelical Lutheran Church, she married Kenneth Schaufel who passed away on September 23, 1999. She was proud to be a homemaker and caregiver and for a short time, from 1946 until 1947, she worked as a packer for Moriarity Manufacturing. A member of St. Mary's Lutheran Church, Shirley also helped at St. Mary’s with the Food and Toy Christmas Basket Drive for 15 years, helped coordinate a Blood Drive for 8 years, and for 4 years she helped in the Kitchen with Bible School. For 15 years she also served as a branch officer of A.A.L./ Thrivent, was a Girl Scout Troop Leader in her younger years, a member of the Stroke Club, Kenosha Voluntary Action Center, a supporter of the Inns Program & Shalom Center, WWAAC/Kenosha County Easter Seal Service Unit, served for 20 years on the Kenosha County Easter Seal Board, was a supporter of The Kenosha Achievement Center, Friends of the Kenosha Public Library, Salvation Army, 2nd Harvester of Milwaukee, and was a member of A.B.L.E. Advocacy Group of which she was a charter member of Kenosha. Shirley was a huge advocate for the disabled and elderly. Her volunteer efforts earned her numerous recognitions. Surviving are her two daughters, Carol (Stephano) Schaufel Romero of Kenosha and Susan (Bob) VanBendegom of Kenosha; three grandchildren, Kenneth, David and Mindy VanBendegom, all of Kenosha; two step-grandchildren, Steven and Gavino Romero; and three step great-grandchildren, Evelyce, Alicia and Gavino Romero Jr. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 15th, at St. Mary's Lutheran Church at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Sunday at Proko Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Monday at St. Mary's Lutheran Church from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary's Lutheran Church Food Cupboard, WWAAC, The Salvation Army, Kenosha Achievement Center, or Easter Seals Wisconsin-Camperships would be greatly appreciated by the family.
