Avis L. Johnson, 92, of Oostburg, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at her house along the shores of Lake Michigan. She put her trust in the Lord and now is with Him forever in the heavenly realm. Avis was born on July 13, 1924 in Milwaukee to Carl and Irma (Jaeger) Swenson. She was a graduate of Rufus King High School in Milwaukee and then received her Bachelors of Arts in Social Work from Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. On September 10, 1949 she married Carl S. Johnson at Augustana Lutheran Church in Milwaukee and together they raised four children in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death in 1979. On August 28, 1981, she married Paul Newcomb and he preceded her in death in 1992. Avis was a dedicated and devoted wife and mother. Avis was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls, where she enjoyed attending Bible study. She loved her country, playing tennis, talking politics and spending time with her family and her dog, Gisette. Avis is survived by four children: Douglas (Elaine) Johnson of Darien, IL; Carla (Warren) Schmidt of Oxford, IA; Todd (Heather) Johnson of Cedar Grove, WI; Lorre (Claus) Weingaertner of Oostburg, WI; four step-children: Stephanie (Joseph) Hassler of Reedsburg, WI;, Eric (Robin) Newcomb of Oostburg, WI; Matthew (Kristi) Newcomb of Reedsburg, WI; and Peter Newcomb of Fort Wayne, IN; one sister, Carleen (Leif – deceased) Larson of West Bend, WI; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; cousins, Vernon Nelson, Grant Nelson, Evan (Linda) Jaeger and Robert (Gloria) Swenson. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Avis was preceded in death by her two brothers, Gerald (Mildred and Marguerite) Swenson and Richard Swenson. Special thanks to her caregivers Stella Maloney, Jennifer Dulmes, Comfort Keepers, Earth Angels and Aurora at Home Hospice Program. A memorial service to celebrate Avis’ life and the memories will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls, WI. Visitation will be at 3:00 PM with the service following at 5:00PM.
