Paul Harmeling Obituary

Paul Harmeling, 90, of Oostburg, went home to his Lord on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at his home. Paul was born on December 8, 1925 to Derwin and Ada (Wolfert) Harmeling. He was a 1944 graduate of Oostburg High School. Paul then served his country in the United States Army from 1944-1946, stationed in Italy during WWII. On June 20, 1947 he married Delores “Peg” DeSmith at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church. She preceded him in death on November 12, 2007. Paul enjoyed being a farmer, cash cropping and public warehousing. Paul was a member of First Reformed Church in Oostburg, where he served as a deacon and elder. Paul was a member of the American Legion-Hartman Lammers Post 286, the Kiwanis, the Oostburg golf and bowling leagues. Paul was a sports enthusiast, being Oostburg Athletic Department’s honorary #1 fan. He had the privilege of being the grand marshal for the Oostburg homecoming parade. Paul and Peg traveled extensively throughout the United States and to 22 different countries. Paul looked forward to the Wednesday morning Sheepshead card game at Jerry Brill’s home, his Friday morning pancake at Judi’s and going out to eat with his brother-in-law, Al. Paul loved the outdoors, especially chopping wood, raccoon hunting and time at the cottage. He took great pride in his grandchildren and great grandchildren and was an avid supporter of their activities. Paul is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Rev. Roger) Voskuil of Sioux Center, IA, and Sally Harmeling of Oostburg; his son, Al (Rita) Harmeling of Oostburg; eight grandchildren, Lori (Rick) Scholtens of IA, Renae (Dan) Pottebaum of IA, Dana (Pat) Brenneman of IA, Jessica (special friend Jeff Galaway) Finstad of NV, Heather (Chris) Sawdon of MI, Kristina (Dan) Chua of CA, Brett Harmeling of TX and Andrew Harmeling of WI; 12 great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Mary DeSmith of MI, Muriel DeSmith of IA, Donna DeSmith and Harriet DeSmith both of Oostburg; one brother-in-law, Al Risseeuw of Cedar Grove. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Paul is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Delores “Peg”; parents-in-law, Lloyd and Anna DeSmith; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene (Elizabeth), Audley, Robert, Roger and Gary DeSmith and Judy Risseeuw. A funeral service to celebrate Paul’s life will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 at 11 am at First Reformed Church in Oostburg with Rev. Brian Taylor and Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial will be at Oostburg Cemetery. Relatives and friends may greet the family on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Wenig Funeral Home in Oostburg from 3-7pm. Memorial funds for First Reformed Church of Oostburg and the Oostburg Educational Foundation are being established in Paul’s name.
