Ronald John Doel Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Ronald Doel, on April 9, 2020 in Sundre, Alberta at the age of 101 years. He passed peacefully in the Sundre Hospital with family at his side. Ron was a strong, kind, gentle man much loved by all his family. He was a pioneer and long-time resident of Caroline, Alberta where he lived and farmed for over 80 years. He had many good friends and neighbors that he enjoyed visiting and working with over those years. Ron was born on May 27, 1918 on a prairie homestead in Sedalia, Alberta to William and Veva Doel. When he was 16, the family packed up all their belongings and livestock to move to “greener patures”. They settled in Caroline, Alberta on September 1, 1934 and began the hard work of clearing land, building homes, growing crops and raising livestock that was the family farm where he resided in his own home until February 2020. Ronnie loved the farm and believed in hard work. As a young man his work ethic and skill with teams of horses was noticed by his future father-in-law, Clark Wren who hired him often. He asked Ron to accompany his teams of horses by rail to Sicamous, British Columbia and work in the logging business with him. Ronnie took the job and married his daughter Mollie Wren on July 29, 1941. They eventually moved back to the family farm in Caroline where he spent the rest of his life and over sixty-six years together with his beloved Mollie. He always considered himself a very lucky man who had a good long life. He was thankful for the many years he was able to continue to work on the farm with his family. He enjoyed good books, square dancing with Mollie and road trips together in their motor home. Our family was able to enjoy trips and many celebrations with him including his 100th Birthday in May 2018. We have many fond memories to cherish. Ron is survived by his two daughters, Ilene (John) Bugbee of Caroline, Alberta and Loretta (Tim) Kennedy of Airdrie, Alberta, one brother, Richard (Marilyn) Doel of Calgary, Alberta, daughter-in-law Marj Atkinson of Caroline, Alberta, seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his wife Mollie (Wren) Doel, and son Kenneth Doel, brother George Doel and sisters Margaret Brown and Madeleine Parks and a great granddaughter Kyla Graham-Doel. Our family would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the Hospital staff, Doctors and Nurses in the Sundre Hospital who took such good care of our father in his last weeks. We are also very grateful to the staff at Mountainview Seniors Housing in Sundre which was Ron’s residence since February. We look forward to the opportunity to celebrate his life with family and friends at a future date. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Caroline Cemetery.
