Edmund Schmeichel

Edmund E. Schmeichel, 91, a long time resident of St. Joseph, entered into God?s presence on October 26, 2002 in Avon, Indiana where he had resided for the last three years. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, 404 E. Glenlord Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Carl Pagel officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville. Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, or Living Christ Lutheran Church, Avon, Indiana. Those wishing to share a memory on line may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Mr. Schmeichel was born to Gustav & Caroline (Deckert) Schmeichel on May 11, 1911 in Russia. His family moved to the twin cities area in 1913 and he resided here most of his life. On June 22, 1947 he married the former Olga Walter in North Dakota. Edmund was employed by Whirlpool Corporation for over forty years, retiring in 1969. He enjoyed his longstanding membership and friends in the Whirlpool Old Timers Club. Edmund is survived by his wife Olga Schmeichel; a daughter-Karen Kuiper of Benton Harbor; a son-Edmund D. (Sheryl) Schmeichel of Avon, IN; a sister-Olga Martin of St. Joseph; four grandchildren-Kim (Eugene) Upton of Benton Harbor; Kelly Smith of Stevensville; Chris (Shelly) Schmeichel of Noblesville, IN; LoriJo Schmeichel of Avon, IN; five great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews. Mr. Schmeichel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-Bert Schmeichel, Adam & Adolph Howader; two sisters-Linda Osiginac & Elsie Rudowske; and his son-in-law-Al Kuiper.
