Allen Rundquist Durango, Colorado Obituary

Allen Rundquist

Allen John Rundquist, 82, of Hesperus, Colorado, passed away on February 17, 2019 after 4 months in Mercy Hospice House. He died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and his beloved dog Jetta Mae. Allen was born on March 7, 1936 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Norman and Emma Rundquist. He grew up in Plat, Wisconsin where he graduated from Hartford High School. During his summers Allen did construction work and helped his father run a country tavern and dancehall, Plat Tap. After graduating high school Allen enlisted in the US Army. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1956. Returning to the Milwaukee area he joined the Bricklayers Union Local 8 and was soon engaged to be married to the love of his life Geraldine May Eilbes. In 1957 Allen and Jeri moved to North Lake, Wisconsin where they built their home and raised their children Brett and Deanna. After a successful career in masonry construction, Al and Jeri decided they were ready for a new adventure and packed up their belongings and ventured to Durango, Colorado with their family. Allen and his son Brett partnered together to begin Rundquist Masonry as a family business which now includes his grandsons, Clayton and Justin. He retired from the company in 2008. After retirement he and Jeri became snow birds purchasing a second home in Sun City, Arizona. Enjoying the sunny climate and his love of golf Al had many fun years in retirement until 2018, when declining health brought him back full time to their Hesperus home. Al loved life and all it had to offer. His wonderful sense of humor kept us all laughing right up until the end. He loved hard work, being outdoors, having coffee with the boys and a laugh with a friend. He cared deeply for the well-being and the happiness of his family. Allen is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Geraldine, his sister Sharon (Bob) of Hancock, Wisconsin, his son Brett (Lori), daughter Deanna (Daddy's Girl) Rundquist, 3 grandchildren Clayton (Ryan) Rundquist, Justin (Kara) Rundquist and Emma Dake, and 5 great grandchildren Ashby, Evan, Ivan, Nina and Harlin all of Durango, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columba Catholic Church. A Celebration of Allen's Life will be planned later in the spring 2019. Donations in honor of Allen's memory, may be made to: Hospice House of Mercy, 1010 Three Springs Blvd, Durango, CO 81301.
