William R. Woerner Obituary

William R. Woerner, 96, of Stevensville died at the Willows Assisted Living Community on June 14, 2012. Bill was born on February 6, 1916, to William A. and Christabelle (Bowen) Woerner in Vanatta, Ohio, a small town near Newark. He graduated from Utica High School. Bill married Ellen H. Van Zoeren on December 31, 1942, in Columbus, Ohio. A World War II veteran, Bill served in the South Atlantic Wing of the U.S. Army Corps from July 1942 to November 1945, working as an air traffic control tower operator and supervisor in Brazil. After being honorably discharged in 1945, he worked as a sales and service superintendent for DeLaval Dairy Equipment Co. in Ohio and Michigan and then as a buyer for Kaiser Heater in Cadillac, Michigan. After serving as the assistant manager and sales representative for Inland Lakes Foundry Co. in Cadillac, he moved with his family to Grand Haven and worked for Brunswick Corp. in Muskegon as an industrial buyer until his retirement in 1979. Bill was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven and had served as an Elder since 1955 in this and other Presbyterian churches he attended. He was also a member of the American Legion – Charles A. Conklin Post 28. His personal interests included gardening, bowling, fishing, shrimping, hunting, walking, and bicycling. He was a self-described handyman and “do-it-yourself guy” who tackled everything from simple repair jobs to totally finishing the interior of a new house, including all electrical wiring, plumbing, and furnace/ductwork installation. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ellen; one son, Robert, of Tucson; one daughter, Janice, of Stevensville; three grandchildren: William, Katherine, and Kristina Bussone; one brother, Gerald Eugene (Celia); and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Christabelle Bowen, and a sister, Harriet Ports. Arrangements are entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel-St. Joseph. The Memorial Service will be held at the Fairplain Presbyterian Church, 210 W. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, on Saturday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will be held one hour before the service beginning at 10:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Food Pantry, Fairplain Presbyterian Church, or to Hospice at Home, Inc.
