James Thomas Willcutt Obituary

James Thomas Willcutt, 76, of Atkins, passed away Monday, December 9, 2019, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1943, in Bells Chapel, son of the late Fred and Elsie Polk Willcutt. He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Fred Willcutt. He is survived by his wife, Norma; two daughters, Wendy and husband Jeff Petty of Atkins, and Laurie Willcutt of North Little Rock; and one special grandson, Tyler Petty. He graduated from Arkansas Polytechnic College (ATU), then graduated from Rolla University with a Master’s in Physics. He touched many lives throughout his 38 years of teaching during which he was awarded the Outstanding Professor of the Year and the Faculty Award of Excellence in Teaching at ATU. He was a lifelong member of the Bells Chapel United Methodist Church. He served as Sunday School teacher for over 50 years and was Trustee and Treasurer for many years. He served as President of the Bells Chapel Cemetery Association and was a member of the United Methodist Men’s Group. He loved the game of baseball and was able to play well into his 40’s. He was a member of the Atkins Swamp Eagles, and had a lifelong passion for the game. After retirement from Arkansas Tech he was able to fully pursue his favorite pastime and hobby, building beautiful items from his “woodshop.” He had a tremendous talent in seeing the beauty in pieces of wood and creating one of a kind masterpieces. He was very proud of the fact that many of his pieces were scattered throughout the state and even in foreign countries. Thomas enjoyed a good joke or story and wanted everyone to laugh with him. He listened to music, especially the music that was performed by his grandson Tyler. A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00-4:00 PM, Saturday, December 14, at Lemley Chapel, with a private funeral service held prior.
