Nancy McCarthy Obituary

Nancy Martin McCarthy, age 81, of Colorado Springs passed away on June 13, 2014 at Pikes Peak Hospice at Penrose. Ms. McCarthy was born in San Gabriel, CA and lived in Portland, OR before moving to Colorado Springs in 1983. She was born December 14, 1932 to Evart and Leon (Hawkins) Charlton in San Gabriel, CA. She attended Alhambra High School, before pursuing a Bachelors Degree from Occidental College, which she received in 1954. She worked as a school teacher and mother in the Pacific Northwest, before obtaining a Masters Degree in Education from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After moving to Colorado Springs, she subsequently started a successful career as an agent with Allstate Insurance. Nancy enjoyed reading, music, art, and most of all spending time with her family. She was giving, thoughtful, patient, and loving. She always thought of others before herself and taught her children and grandchildren the values of hard work, honesty, family, and faith in God. She is survived by her three children: Sara Martin (Colorado Springs), Matthew Martin and his wife Diane (Highlands Ranch, CO), and Joseph McCarthy (Colorado Springs); her sister, Mary Haller and her husband Donald (Colorado Springs); and her four grandchildren, Jordan Martin Casey, Kristiana Nicole Martin, and Hannah Caroline & Emma Jean Martin; all from Colorado. Other surviving relatives include her two nieces, Kathleen (Krebs and her husband Matthew(Maryland) and Nancy Lasseter and her husband Terry (Los Angeles); and her two nephews, Martin Makela and Ray Makela and his wife Brenda, both of Seattle, Washington. Her son Charlton Martin predeceased her. Memorial Services are to be held in Colorado Springs at St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church (7400 Tudor Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80919) on Friday, June 27th at 1 pm. Ms. McCarthy will be buried at Oswego Pioneer Cemetery in Lake Oswego, OR. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Michael the Archangel Episcopal Church. Nancy Martin McCarthy was more loving and more resilient in times of crisis than four children could ever expect or hope from a mother. Her memory and infinite optimism and kindness are carried on with them. Arrangements are under the care of Evergreen Funeral Home in Colorado Springs, CO.
