Charles Kinney

Charles Duane Kinney, 79, died Monday, July 16, 2012, at home in Durango, Colo. A memorial service will be Saturday, July 21, 2012, at 10:30 A.M. at Ignacio Community Church and Pastor Randall Haynes will be officiating. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. Mr. Kinney was born August 29, 1932 in Liberal, Kan., the son of Justin and Bernice Kinney. The family moved to Ridgeway, where he grew up. Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy at a young age during the Korean War. He served on a battleship as a gunner and as a Sea-Bee. Duane married Rose Elaine Nelson in 1956 in Canyon City, Colo. Upon his return to Southwest Colorado, Duane began working for the Colorado Department of Transportation in Durango; he worked on numerous slides and recoveries on the passes between Durango and Ouray. He retired from the state after 31 years of service and continued to work for local contractors in and around Durango. Duane adored his grandchildren and loved to ride and care for horses. Mr. Kinney is preceded in death by his wife, Rose Elaine Kinney, his parents, and brothers Darrell Kinney and Les Kinney. Mr. Kinney is survived by sons Roy Kinney of Aztec, N.M., and Dan Kinney of Ignacio, Colo., four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by brothers Aaron Kinney of Olathe, Colo., and Clark Kinney of Bozeman, Mont.
