Dorothy Myers Obituary

Dorothy Helen Myers passed away peacefully in her sleep August 28, 2017, at Four Corners Nursing Center in Durango, Colorado. She had recently celebrated her 96th birthday with family and friends. She was born August 2, 1921, to George and Flora Young in Gates, Nebraska. The youngest of five children, Dorothy was the only one to have been born at the farmhouse. She is the last survivor of her siblings. After graduating from Gates High School, Dorothy continued her education earning her teaching certification at Kearney State Teachers College. She then taught school for two years. On a visit to her sister, who was living in Dolores, Colorado, she met her husband Jack Myers. Jack and Dorothy were married in June, 1943, and made their home in Durango. They had been married for forty-nine years before he passed away in 1992. The couple had four sons: Gary, Mitchel and Michael, and Douglas. The couple‘s son Michael passed away in 1985 from a helicopter accident. Jack and Dorothy loved the mountains. One of their favorite pasttimes was taking their sons for a jeep ride up in the La Platas, then making breakfast over a campfire. Dorothy was a people person and participated in various ministries in her church First Baptist of Durango. She especially loved working with children. Those activities included sharing Bible stories in Child Evangelism, hosting five-day clubs and serving as a listener for Awanas. Her children‘s ministries also entailed teaching her grandchildren many songs, motions included. She loved them all and made sure they knew Jesus loved them too. Dorothy is survived by three sons and their wives: Gary and Regina Myers of Rome, GA; Mitchel and Milli Myers of Panama; Douglas and Katherine Myers of Aztec, N.M.; daughter-in-law Betty Myers of Ft. Collins, CO. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. A celebration of Dorothy‘s life will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 5, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Durango.
