Kenneth Craig Obituary

Kenneth A. Craig, 80, died Thursday, November 10, 2011, in Durango. Mr. Craig was born July 30, 1931, in Durango, the son of Platt and Grace Craig. He grew up in Durango on a ranch (running cattle) on the Florida Mesa. He graduated from Durango High School in 1949, and he married Ruth Gibbens on October 8, 1951, at First Baptist Church in Durango. He enlisted in the National Guard in the early 50's and served for several years. Mr. Craig painted bridges and water tanks for the Denver Rio Grande Western, and he worked at the local fish hatchery as well. He learned to weld while working for the Vanadium Corporation of America. He also worked for El Paso Natural Gas at the gas plant east of town (now the Williams gas plant) for nearly 30 years. A “do it yourselfer" and handyman, he loved old cars and old tractors, and he was commonly known for remodeling his home, helping others with their projects, and working on his own vehicle and farm repairs. He moved his home from Los Alamos and placed it at the current location, where he lived until present times. Mr. Craig loved to travel across the United States and was a student of U.S. and world geography. He enjoyed jeeping, and he is remembered as always choosing the back road over the main freeway. He loved to fish, and enjoyed visiting family. He was a former member of the John Birch Society. An active member of First Baptist Church, Mr. Craig served as a deacon and trustee. He was known as a man who loved God and his family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; and brothers Philip R. Craig and Roger Craig. He is survived by son Meril (Spouse: Ann) Craig of Aumsville, Ore.; daughter Lynn (Spouse: Kyle) Graff of Durango; son Andrew D. Craig of Durango; Grandchildren: Jason Craig, Danae Craig, Aaron Craig, Caleb (Spouse: Jill) Graff, Joshua Graff, and Jordon Graff; sister Martha Walker of Durango, brother Howard (Spouse: Vi) Craig of Durango, and sister-in-law Shirley Craig of Edgartown, Mass. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 14, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Durango. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Mercy, 1 Mercado St., Suite 270, Durango, CO 81301, or First Baptist Church of Durango.
