Mr. Peter Patraniuk, age 88 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, died in Grandview Lodge, on Sunday, May 1, 2005. Peter was born in Winnipeg. As a young man he moved to the city and has lived here since. He was a graduate of Fort William Vocational School. Peter served in the Canadian Navy during WW II. After the war, Peter returned home and started work at Great Lakes Paper Mill, retiring as a Welder after over 40 years of service. He married Tonia Kohut and last year they celebrated 66 years of marriage. In his younger years, Peter was very involved in sports. He played Juvenile and Junior Hockey and later on he coached the Great Lakes Bantam Hockey Team. Peter also played football for the Ukes and the Mustangs. Peter was a member of the Church of the Holy Cross, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6, Fort William Prosvita Male Choir and the Naval Association. Peter is survived by his wife, Tonia, children, Peter A. Patraniuk and Tonia Prokopchuk, grandchildren, Kathleen Patraniuk, Ernie, Stephen and Anthony Prokopchuk and great-grandchildren, Evan and Michael Prokopchuk. Other relatives also survive. He was predeceased by his parents, infant son, William, sister and brother-in-law, John and Ann Baryluk, daughter-in-law, Antonia Patraniuk and son-in-law, Ernie Prokopchuk. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2005, when family and friends will gather for Liturgy in the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, at 10:00 am., celebrated by Very Rev. Bohdan Bilinsky. Interment will follow at Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery on Arthur Street. Panachyda will be offered on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Church of the Holy Cross. If friends desire, memorials to the Holy Cross Memorial Fund or charity of your choice would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Peter Patraniuk in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove. Annual dedication service will be held Sunday, June 25, 2006.
