Robert Vernon Johnson Obituary

Robert (Bob) grew up in Pensacola, FL from the age of seven, the second of two children. He was the son of a Naval Carpenter’s Mate on the USS Langley from Iowa who met and married the daughter of Danish immigrant who had worked his way up to Desk Sergeant with the Pensacola Police Department. Robert’s family joined the McIlwain Presbyterian Church when he was nine in 1945. He graduated from Pensacola High School in the first class to graduate from the new PHS. After graduation, he joined the Marine Corp from 1954 to 1957 and was in an AmTrak unit, responsible for the crew and vehicle. He was called back by the Navy for a short time because of the Cuban Missile Crisis, but always identified as a Marine. After being released by the Navy, he went to FSU to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. In 1965 he was hired by the Escambia County School District to teach World Geography at Bellview Junior High. When the ninth grade moved to Tate High School, he moved with them to continue teaching several Social Studies classes, married Arlene E. Murray November 20, 1982, later earned his Master’s Degree in Education, and retired from Tate High School in 1992. He spent his retired years devoted in service to Christ as an active member at McIlwain Presbyterian Church where he took several rolls over the years including Deacon, and the Missions Committee supporting Christian Missions to the World. He also took this passion in 1992 to the Civitan service organization where he was a two time President of the Pensacola Civitan’s (1994-95, 2001-02), with service to citizens with developmental disabilities that spanned two decades until he resigned in 2010. He is described by a Civitan colleague ‘as a quiet, humble leader that made everyone feel at ease. His footprint of volunteerism and citizenship made him a great Civitan.’ His other great passion in life was his marriage to Arlene Murray Johnson. He loved God and everything about his life, approaching everything with a never ending sense of humor. Robert will be missed and is survived by his daughter Bethany, her husband Richard Cox, and three adult grandchildren Joshua, Jennifer, and Julia. Together November 20, 1982 to Eternity; Robert and Arlene Johnson married on November 20, 1982. She retired a few years after Robert retired, and together they dove into their faith, as a team with their McIlwain family, and worked for the Lord to better the world as He lead them the best they could. Our families and friends are comforted that God has taken them together to be with Him.
