Isaac NeSmith Obituary

Isaac Lamar NeSmith, Jr., 86, of East Palatka, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2019 surrounded by his family at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center following a brief illness. Born and raised in Inaha, Georgia, Lamar was part of a large farming family. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. During his years of military service, he was honored to be selected as a crewman on the United States Presidential Yacht in the service of President Harry S. Truman. Following his military service, he began a career with the Southern Bell Telephone Co. with assignments in Jacksonville, Palatka and St. Augustine. Lamar was a true outdoorsman and tireless fisherman with expertise in both fresh and saltwater. He was known for his love of hiking and taking long walks. Over a period of years, he backpacked over half of the distance of the Appalachian Trail. He is preceded in death by his parents, Isaac L. NeSmith, Sr. and Carrie Bell NeSmith and his sister, Maxine Westbrook. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Carroll NeSmith of East Palatka, two daughters, Valerie Pritchett (Larry) of Welaka, and Staci Helmer (Ray) of Scottsboro, AL, 8 grandchildren, Emily Hall (Rusty), Sarah Stewart (Jason), Will Pritchett (Cynthia), Maggie Hurst (Matt), Trenton Johnson (Elaina), Travis Johnson, Brantley Helmer and Braxton Helmer. So far there are 7 great-grandchildren. Lamar is also survived by his brother, Jimmy NeSmith (LaRue) and a sister, Cortez Purcell, all of Ashburn, GA, many nieces and nephews and two sisters-in-law, Gail McGrath (Danny) and Sherry Altman. Lamar was a lifelong Christian and an active and devoted member of the Westside Church of Christ in Palatka. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka. The family requests memorial donations be sent to Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, 380 Boys Ranch Rd., Palatka, FL 32177 or to Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Ave., Palatka, FL 32177.
