Betty Jo “Mommy Jo” Justus of Hurley, Virginia lost her long battle with dementia Saturday, November 2, 2019. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Jean Rife, Silvia Jean Mullins, Ilene Dotson, Glenna Smith, Roy and Kenneth Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John A. Justus and one son, Danny Ray Justus. Betty Jo began her journey of life May 30, on Guesses Fork, Hurley, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Lent and Beaulah Cooper Hall. She spent most of her time growing up with her grandmother, Caroline. Born one of 15 children, she soon grew up to find the love of her life, John A. Justus Sr. They were married on January 28, in the old Grundy Courthouse. She wore a pale, pink satin dress. They continued their love story for 42 years. After marriage, children soon followed with the pride of her very being in Danny Ray, Jacqueline, and John Paul. Her new role of wife, mother and homemaker was her greatest accomplishments. Her family meant everything to her. She and John A. were business owners all their lives and resided in Hurley, Virginia. Their businesses were successful, Justus Grocery and John A. Justus Trucking. She was a bookkeeper for 37 years along with raising their children. Betty Jo was a strong willed, feisty, sassy, beautiful sister, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. All roles in her life she did with the utmost precision. Her home was immaculate, along with her personal style and presence. She would send you awaywith a life lesson whether you wanted it or not. She loved the lake life and living life to the fullest. She was a strong supporter of the Hurley Rebels and prepared many meals for them. She always said, “A hot meal” would give you strength. Betty Jo “Momma Jo” will be missed greatly by all who knew her. The world has lost a little sparkle with her passing. Those left to carry on her legacy are: daughter, Jacquelin Justus Layne and husband Rusty Layne of Hurley, Virginia; Son, John Paul Justus, Jr. and wife Marie Childress Justus of Hurley, Virginia. Other survivors Include: Grandchildren John Russell Layne and Morgan Layne Tara Jo Layne and Zack Lester Will Layne Shiana Justus Slone and Austin Slone John A Justus, Jr. Emma Justus Marshall Justus Luke Justus One Great-Grandbaby Clay Carter Layne Brothers and Sisters Shirley Rife and husband JC. Of Hurley, Virginia Linda Cline and husband Eugene of Hurley, Virginia Earl Hall of Hurley, Virginia Luther Hall and wife Geraldine of Hurley, Virginia Opal Rife of Stopover, Kentucky Evelyn Dotson of Hurley, Virginia Geraldine Mullins of Slate Creek, Virginia Pearl Hurley of Lesters Fork, Virginia Special Niece Joann Crockett Stacy Special Friend Loraine Layne Funeral services for Betty Jo Justus will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019, 2:00 P.M. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, Virginia with Eugene Whited and Justin Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Justus Family Cemetery, Guesses Fork Road, Hurley, Virginia. The family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday evening 7:00. PM. at the Virginia Funeral. A service will also be held at 7:00 P.M. Serving as Pallbearers will be John Russell Layne, William Harrison Layne, John Anderson Justus, Rusty Layne, Zack Lester, Austin Slone, Toby Davis, J.C. Rife, Eugene Cline, Chris Cline, family, and friends. Virginia Funeral Home of Grundy, Virginia is in charge of the arrangements.
