Charles Herbert Howe
Deer Isle- Charles “Chick” Herbert Howe Jr, 92, politely excused himself surrounded by family and laughter at exactly high noon on November 24, 2019. He was born on June 7, 1927 in Rockland Maine to Charles and Bertha (Griffin) Howe. He grew up and attended school in Union, Maine. In high school he was the catcher on the baseball team and played forward on the basketball team. He volunteered for the Navy while still a senior in high school and missed his graduation ceremony to serve our country in World War II as a plank owner on the USS Princeton, under then Captain Hoskins. He was a member of the flight deck crew as a “hook release” man and unhooked the planes after they landed on the flight deck. His crew broke a record by landing a plane every 17 seconds. He later attended East Coast Aero Tech and received his aircraft mechanic, pilot, and instructor licenses. He became an instructor at the school and while employed there met and married his honey, the late Anne Howe. They lived briefly in Washington DC, where he worked as a mechanic for Capitol Airlines and hated the area! Chick then returned home with his city bride to enjoy the country life in Maine. H He joined the Maine Warden service in 1957 and patrolled the area North and East of Greenville for 20 years. His patrol today is often referred to as part of the “100 mile wilderness” and was over 900 square miles of many ponds, brooks, streams, and rivers with special regulations. At that time there were only three very short dead end roads that went into this district and he spent much of his time traversing this rugged terrain alone and on foot. It is there he was convinced “he wore out his legs” He cared about the resources he was protecting and believed he changed many folks behaviors by talking to them, treating them as he would like to be treated, and issuing a summons only as needed. His sergeant often wasn’t thrilled by this strategy but we know of at least one local judge who was impressed. Chick and Anne operated Spencer Pond Camps for 25 years. While at Spencer, they spent winters in Sarasota, Florida. After retiring from the camps they moved to Thorndike, ME where they could be close to his son, the late Charles “Chip” Howe IV and his wife Jane Aiudi who were residing in the vicinity. His family and friends will remember him as a great storyteller. He was a selfless, kind, gentle, humorous teacher, who was always optimistic by jingles! Chick was a rock hound who loved a good western, a day fishing, and a night under the stars in the woods. He was our greatest generation hero, a man of humble grit and wisdom, tough as nails to the core with a gentle exterior and radiant soul that had a song for everything. Chick is survived by his daughter Catherine Bright of Amarillo, Texas; his granddaughter Christine Howe Black and her husband Dana Black of Brooksville, ME; grandson John of McKenney, VA, grandson Joseph and wife Tammy of Friendship, ME, granddaughter Rebecca Martin and her husband Patrick of Lake Isabella, CA.; six great grandchildren: Madelyn, Oceania, Breton, Marshal, Samantha, Brian, Hannah, and Leanne; a special god son, Dr. Christopher Palestrant, wife Jen, and their son William of Norfolk, Va.; and a daughter in law Jane Aiudi of Vassalboro, ME. Chick was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Anne Howe; a son, Chip Howe; and a granddaughter Heidi Henry. A funeral service will be held at the Penobscot United Methodist Church, 14 Southern Bay Rd, Penobscot ME on Saturday, November 30th, 2019 at 11 am. The family invites relatives and friends to share stories, conversation, and refreshments in a celebration of life at the church immediately following the Service.
