Carlton Leighton

Carlton “BO” Leighton Lubec Carlton “BO' Leighton , 83,passed away unexpectedly on April 02, 2020 at Downeast Community Hospital in Machias Maine. He was born on March 16, 1937 in Lubec to the late Lloyd Leighton and Mildred Gates (Sawtelle). He graduated from Lubec High School in 1955 and joined the US Navy and spent 4 years serving his country. He returned to Lubec in 1959 and married Linda Leighton (Dennison) on January 23, 1960. Carlton helped with his father’s funeral business from 1959-1980. He also ran an oil business for many years and helped countless people over those years that struggled during the hard times. Later in life Carlton worked at and retired from the Downeast Correctional Facility in Bucks Harbor. He spent a number of years on the selectman board for the town of Lubec. He was a very active member of the Stuart Green Legion Post #65 for 51 years and spent 48 years as a member of the Washington Masonic Lodge #37 in Lubec. Carlton had a love of the ocean and spent time during the summer months lobster fishing, gill netting, catching cod, pollack and sardine fishing. During the fall he dragged scallops. His favorite pastime was spending lots of time at the cottage with friends and family. Those were some of the best times of his life. He also followed the Lubec sporting teams during the 70’s and never missed a game during his children years of high school. Later in life he loved the summer months and enjoyed watching his beloved NY Yankees play baseball. He even ventured out of Washington County to take in a game at Yankee Stadium with family and friends. Carlton was predeceased by his wife of 58 years Linda Joyce Leighton (Dennison) : his daughter Marietta Leighton; sisters Marguerite Greenwood and Josephine Tedford ,and his brother John Leighton. Carlton is survived by his sons, Dean Leighton of Newark DE and Dale Leighton of Lubec ME. His grandsons Dean Leighton currently residing in Stuttgart Germany, Patrick Leighton of Lubec ME, granddaughter Ashley Graber of Newark DE. Great Grandsons Declan Graber of Newark DE, Dean Leighton III of Crofton MD and Great Granddaughters Kate Leighton of Brewer ME and Addy Graber of Newark DE. His sister Anna Merriman of Westbrook, ME and brother Reggie Sawtelle of Lubec, ME. and countless relatives.
