Obituary for Richard F. Rawson

Richard F. "Dick" Rawson, of Beverly, died peacefully Tuesday evening, November 29th, at the Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation Center – Blueberry Hill after battling a lengthy illness; he was 82 years old. Born in Rumford, Maine in 1929, he was the son of Marion N. Cousens and Frank E. Rawson, and was raised in Brunswick, Maine, graduating from high school there in 1947. There he met and married his wife, Carolyn L. Lodge; theirs was a union that lasted over 60 years. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1952, before taking a job with the Sylvania Lighting Company, first in Salem and then in Danvers; he retired in 1989 after 37 years with the company.
Beyond work, Dick was an active community leader. He was a member of the Immanuel Congregational Church in Beverly, serving for many years on the church's Board of Trustees. He even taught math in a GED program in his retirement. But his most rewarding contributions came from a 73-year-long association with the Boy Scouts of America, earning the organization's Silver Beaver Award for a life of distinguished service. At the time of his passing, he was still an active scout leader, serving as an at-large district commissioner for Essex County's Yankee Clipper Council.

Dick is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their many offspring: son David A. Rawson and his wife S.J. Wolfe of Worcester; daughter Anne E. Rawson of Derry, New Hampshire; son Steven R. Rawson and his wife Joanna of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter Linda L. Rawson of Beverly; daughter Barbara J. Dunn and her husband Brian of Manchester, New Hampshire; daughter Carol L. Rawson of Beverly; daughter Mary B. Rawson of North Reading; seven grandchildren – Rebecca, Robert, and Rachel Dunn of Manchester, New Hampshire; Matthew, Ian, and Erika Connor of Peabody; and Carl Oaklund of Wakefield, Rhode Island – and a great-grand daughter, Allison Day Oaklund. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara A. Wolfe of Clearwater, Florida, and was predeceased by a son, Alan B. Rawson, in 1998.

Funeral services will be held at the Immanuel Church, 140 Bridge Street, Beverly on Saturday at 11am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 9 Dane Street, Beverly (Downtown location) on Friday from 4 to 7pm. Burial will be in North Beverly Cemetery. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, Dick can be best honored by memorial contributions made to the charity of your choice. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com
