Frederick Lowery
Frederick Harold Lowery Portland Age 86, passed away peacefully on October 30th surrounded by his family. Born on December 6, 1930, Fred was a 1948 graduate of Portland High School. He was a Marine and while in the service, he married the love of his life, Patricia. They were married for 63 years. Fred attended Central Michigan University, where he played basketball, and later received his master's degree from Michigan State University. He went on to teach physical education, coach and serve as athletic director at Portland High School. Fred loved to coach and cherished the relationships he made with his players. Coach Lowery was a father figure to many more than just his family. He was a master storyteller and the ultimate game organizer. After retirement, Fred enjoyed spending time with friends in Bonita Springs, Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia (Howard) parents Elmo and Merle (Ellwanger) Lowery, in-laws William and Betty (Braford) Howard and his daughter Katie and grandson, Fred III. Fred is survived by his children Anne (Dennis) Bellinger, Mike (Mary), Dan (Kim), and Fred Jr (Amy); grandchildren Brooke (Chris) Miller, Jill (Chris)Janczewski, Alex (Abby) Priebe, Paula, Paige, Morgan, Eric, Madison, Payton and McKenzie; 6 great grandchildren; sister Janet (Brad) VanDeventer, many in-laws and several nieces and nephews , along with many other friends. The memorial service will be conducted by John Piercefield at 11:00am Friday November 3, 2017 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St, Portland. The family will receive family and friends from 6-8pm Thursday at the funeral home. For those desiring, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassus Hospice Care or the Portland Athletic Association in memory of Coach Lowery.
