Joseph M Basalla Obituary

Joseph M. “Joe” Basalla, 80, of Clarence, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the Mount Nittany Medical Center. Born on August 16, 1938, in Clarence, he was the son of the late Joseph G. and Mary M. Simcisko Basalla. On September 2, 1967, in Clarence, he married Andrea A. Bucha who survives at home. Joe attended the Snow Shoe High School before he joined the United States Army. He earned the rank of SP4 before his honorable discharge. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman Badge for his service. When Joe returned home from the military service, he went to work at JH France Refractory and worked there for over 40 years. He then went to work for Smitchko Tool and Tie and retired after 5 years of service. Joe was a member of the Queen of Archangels Parish Church in Clarence. He was also a member of the Clarence American Legion Post 813 and a long-time member of the Three Point Sportsman Club in Clarence. Joe was very active in the Clarence American Legion Post 813 and Snow Shoe VFW Post 5644 Honor Guard. He was Sergeant At Arms for over 50 years. He enjoyed baking and cooking traditional Slovak foods, hunting, fishing, and being with his grandchildren. He liked being outdoors, mowing grass, weed eating, gardening, and hunting for mushrooms. Joe is survived by his wife, two sons; Don J. Basalla and wife, Kelly, of Julian and Dennis A. Basalla and his fiancé, Jeri Gonder McPhail, of Clarence and three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Gabriel, and Heath. He is also survived by one brother, John Basalla and his wife, Mary, of Cleveland, OH. Along with his parents, Joe was preceded in death by five brothers, Jerome, George, Ralph, Dennis, and Michael. Visitation will be on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 6-8pm at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home in Snow Shoe with a Rosary service at 7:45pm. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11am at the Queen of Archangel Parish Church in Clarence with Father Michael Wolfe officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Clarence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Clarence American Legion Post 813 C/O The Honor Guard, 1171 Clarence Rd, Clarence, PA 16829 Arrangements have been entrusted to Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, 106 W.
