Edith L. Thayer Obituary

Edith Strong Thayer of Hubbardsville, NY, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Dec. 10 at 5:50 pm. Edith was a resident of Crouse Community Center, Morrisville, NY. She was 101 years old. Edith was born on October 7, 1917 in Clarence Center, NY to Reverend James Leonard and Elizabeth Robinson Strong, the sixth of nine children. Edith was raised in a family with deep faith and love of the Lord. Edith attended and graduated from Union City, PA high school, where she met her first husband Reid Earll. She and Reid had two children, Pamela and Juliana Earll. Shortly after Edith became a single mom, she attended beauty school and opened her own salon to support her family. It was through her hair salon business that Edith was introduced to her husband Floyd Thayer, the father of three. Edith and Floyd married in North East, PA, and then moved to Hubbardsville, NY with Floyd’s three children, Brenda, Constance and Alan and Edith’s youngest daughter Juliana. Edith became very active in her community, she periodically wrote articles for the Mid-York Weekly, was the resident historian, and loved to work in her garden. Edith and Floyd traveled frequently due to Floyd’s fishing tackle business and his photography. Travelling was one of her joys, the other was music. She loved to sing and play her piano. After Floyd’s passing in 1970 Edith returned to work, caring for patients at Hubbardsville Manor, and at the age of 63 she enrolled in classes at Mohawk Valley Community College, graduating in 1984 with an AAS degree in Human Services. Edith had a rich and rewarding life and enjoyed her time with friends and family. She is now singing and dancing as she reunites with her family and friends who passed before her. Edith is survived by three daughters, Brenda Ellis, Juliana Bigford and Connie Harper and one son, Alan Thayer, along with 21 grandchildren and several great and gg-grandchildren. In keeping with her wishes, services are private. Arrangements by Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, NY.
