Mary Stephens

Bedford - Mary Mozelle Stephens, 95, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016. Memorial Service is Pending Visitation: The family will receive friends at Forest Ridge Funeral Home from 2 pm to 5 pm on Saturday, September 10, 2016. Mozelle was born in Corsicana, Texas on July 25, 1921, second youngest of 7 children. Although her mother died when Mozelle was 16, she enjoyed a close family. Four sisters and 2 brothers plus a keen sense of humor equaled fun times. She was particularly close to one sister who loved to party, dance and cause just a little harmless trouble. After high school Mozelle attended Baylor School of Nursing and worked for about 20 years as a Technical Nurse. She married Hollis in 1941 and had one daughter, Barbara. Her husband died in an industrial accident in 1960. She has 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Tiring of nursing, Mozelle became a bookbinder for The Drawing Board but decided to retire early at age 55. After retirement she traveled a lot, especially to Las Vegas where she fell in love with gambling. Barbara later introduced her to Win Star where they both enjoyed the games. Mozelle loved animals and raised Manx cats. She had always been an avid reader and a Dallas Cowboy fan. She attended Oak Cliff Church of Christ most of her life. Her favorite foods were hamburgers, chicken, and chocolate candy. She loved jewelry and was always looking for more. In 1968, while living in a second floor apartment, she noticed the floor felt hot to her feet. She grabbed her cat and ran out of the building which was consumed in flames, the result of an arsonist. She lost everything but her sense of humor prevailed! Barbara remembers one incident in particular that still brings laughter when she thinks about it. One Christmas Barbara and her husband had bought inflatable furniture as a gift for their daughter. After the children were tucked in bed that Christmas Eve, each adult took one piece of the set and began blowing. After one particularly deep blow, Mozelle's dentures went flying across the room with the dog chasing after them! Thankfully the dog left them alone so Mozelle could continue to chew her chocolate candy. Mozella had lived at LaDora since 2005. She enjoyed the staff and the other residents plus her family Mozelle will be remembered a s great mom, and grandmother, who was unique, and had survivability and sense of humor.
